Modern Living Meets Timeless Charm: A Seamless Home Transformation
The Brief
Our client envisioned a modernised home that embraced open-plan living and featured a seamlessly integrated alfresco area, suitable for hosting large gatherings of family and friends.
The Design Approach
To bring this vision to life, we began by removing the sequential "add-ons" typical of period homes, creating a clean slate for a cohesive and functional redesign.
Key Features of the Extension
Enhanced Proportions with a Raft Slab Foundation
By utilising a raft concrete slab at the rear, we were able to lower the floor level, effectively increasing ceiling heights. This adjustment created balance and a sense of spaciousness in the open-plan living area.Boundary Wall with Recycled Red Bricks
We introduced a striking feature wall in the alfresco area, constructed with recycled red bricks, adding a modern edge while respecting the home's period character. The same bricks were used to craft an internal chimney, visually linking the alfresco and the updated living space.Deck Design Above the Raft Slab
Raising the deck above the slab allowed us to eliminate traditional clearance requirements, maximizing the usability of the outdoor area and enhancing its proportions.Scissor Trusses for a Light-Filled Alfresco
The inclusion of scissor trusses elevated the ceiling in the alfresco area, creating an open and inviting atmosphere that welcomes abundant natural light.
The Result
The transformation delivered a harmonious blend of old and new, with the updated living spaces seamlessly integrating with the existing home. The client was thrilled with the balance, functionality, and modern touches, perfectly suited for both everyday living and entertaining.

“This project breathed new life into a small period house. A new roofline, extension and deck created significant space for living and entertaining. It will be enjoyed for years to come”.
