A Thoughtful Studio Addition: Space, Style, and Sustainability

The Brief
Our clients needed more space for their busy family without compromising the existing residence. The priority was to retain the stunning views from the existing living area of the home.

The Design Approach
To achieve this balance, we carefully designed and constructed a studio that met the family’s needs while preserving the beauty of the original residence and its surroundings.

Key Features of the Studio

• Preserving The View With A Recessed Design
  To keep the view from the main living area unobstructed, the studio’s south wall was recessed one metre below the existing ground level. A retaining wall, built to engineering specifications, used core-filled reclaimed bricks above a sturdy raft slab foundation.

• Sustainable Exterior Materials
  The exterior cladding features natural timber silver top ash, paired with recycled bricks to create a harmonious blend of textures. This combination adds warmth and character to the studio while aligning with sustainable building practices.

• Modern Industrial Interior
  The interior boasts a polished concrete floor and exposed recycled brick walls, accented by a feature timber cap for added refinement. The bathroom design incorporated salvaged feature tiles and timber caps from the main house, tying the new addition to the original residence.

• Eco-Friendly Outdoor Finishes
  Composite decking from ModWood, made from recycled plastic, was chosen for its durability and low-maintenance properties. The environmentally conscious material ensures the outdoor spaces remain functional and attractive for years to come.

• Subtle Roofing Design
  A Colorbond Spandeck roof provided a sleek, understated look that minimised the studio’s visual impact on the views from the main living areas and elevated deck.
