A Timeless Transformation For A Classic 1930s Home

The Brief
Our client wanted to renovate their home to increase its functionality and create additional space for extended family stays. Their priority was a second living space upstairs, providing guests with comfort and privacy. The renovation needed to update the rear of the home while staying true to the classic style of its 1930s heritage.

The Design Approach
We approached the project with sensitivity to the home’s character and a focus on enhancing both form and function.

Key Features Of The Renovation

  • Seamless Integration of Old and New
Materials were thoughtfully selected to preserve the home’s heritage. Bricks removed during demolition were cleaned and reused for the extension and landscaping, maintaining continuity with the original structure. Salvaged roof tiles from a neighbouring demolition matched the existing tiles perfectly.

Architectural details like the gable and woodwork were carefully crafted to mirror the design at the front of the house, ensuring a harmonious transition between the old and new.

  • Maximising Space With An Upstairs Addition
The expansive roof cavity was transformed into a spacious second living area and an additional bedroom. Two Velux roof windows flood the upper level with natural light, creating a bright and welcoming space.

  • A Bespoke Kitchen Design
The kitchen was tailored to reflect our client’s vision and the unique character of the home. Featuring English Sycamore timber with its striking fiddleback grain, the design creates a beautiful contrast against the Sydney Bluegum flooring. The result showcases Brian's expertise in joinery and his ability to craft a functional space that reflects the client’s lifestyle.

The Result
This thoughtful renovation has transformed the home into a light-filled, functional space that perfectly balances modern living with period charm. The upstairs addition provides much-needed extra room, with our clients really enjoying the light filled kitchen. The home is now a period showpiece that they love living in.
